SPIDERS

If your travel is confined to the United States, there are only two dangerous varieties of arachnids to be aware of— the well known black widow and the lesser known, but more dangerous, brown recluse spider.

Death is rare from the bite of either of these spiders and is often the result of an allergic reaction rather than the venom itself. Of the two types of spiders, the brown recluse is more dangerous, but is harder to recognize than the black widow which has the hourglass shape on the underside of its abdomen. The brown recluse is smaller (1/4" - 3/4") with a violin shaped brown or black marking in the head region.

If your travels take you to an area where you may be exposed to either of these spiders, do some research before you leave for your trip. Familiarize yourself with their description and habits to help diminish your chances of being bitten.
